A dilemma in college planning at the age of retirement:
Individual Retirement Account’s (IRA) – is one of the best option to withdrawing savings to pay for college tuitions. But is this the only solution?
For almost every aged person whether he is an American or from any other progressive country, the problem is that they have to overcome a variety of challenges in their daily life. Every parent sometimes grandparents tried to fight against two things: Savings at the age of retirement and putting their children in a decent college at the same time. Now the main problem is that if you want to save in one part then invariably you have to cut it from the other part. But your main desire is to save as much money as possible at the time of retirement so that you can put your kids in a better college for better education.
Now you have to plan properly to draw a balancing line between taking from one and give it to other so that both of you and your children get the benefit of it. If you have the proper plan then you don’t have to think about college tuition fees. But if you don’t have that plan, then what will you do? Will you withdraw money from IRA? Generally people don’t want to put a hand on that, and then what is the remedy?
A few years back, it was not a huge problem, but now with the increase of inflation, sky-rocketing price, increase in housing cost it is become difficult for an ordinary person to plan their savings properly. Now, the increase in price has opened the window of opportunity to save for college by the introduce of 529 Savings Plan, Prepaid Savings Account, and Coverdell Accounts.
Withdrawing money from IRA has advantage and disadvantages at the same time. The advantage is that you can use it instantly for higher and better education. And the disadvantage is you are reducing your future income possibility. IRA annual contribution limit which is $4,000 for 2007 and $5,000 for 2008, can make it difficult for you to restore your previous savings.
New law has been introduce for elderly people mostly over 50 years, which allow them to contribute extra $1,000 a year. Though it is not enough, but still it gives some relief to them. With the increase in college savings plan, retirement savings plan has also increased. Previously you have to rely only on one wheel i.e. IRA. But now you can invest your money in various kind of savings plan including 401(K) and in private savings where rate of interest is higher.
Finally, no matter what plan you made, you have to seek the advice of financial advisor. So, plan better before withdrawing from IRA. Better thinking and better planning can lead you to a happy life.
